“I’m from South Florida and grew up in a pizzeria as a kid,” she continued. “I loved it, loved it. At age 9 I was a bus girl in a friend’s family pizzeria; by the time I was 16 I was manager of an Italian restaurant.“ Yet, her path went a different direction; at 22 she went into law enforcement as a dispatcher for the Sunrise Police Department, a job she held for 18 years. During all that time she’d cook at home and bring the food in for everybody at the station.
“My husband and I have twin boys, and when they were getting ready to enter kindergarten we didn’t want them in school down there,” Rodriquez added. So they moved to Ocala, where her father had retired to earlier, and she fell in love with on visits to his home. Five years ago they moved here. As a resident of the Shores, she noticed when Baseline moved out. “I had an office job, but decided sitting in an office all day was not my thing,” she said. “Cooking is my passion.“ Thus, a pizzeria was born. But it’s more than just pizza: Dina’s also offers hot and cold subs, calzones, stromboli and wings — WHOLE wings, not just flats and drumettes.
It was Hank’s idea, she added, that Dina’s Place offer “big slices, and stiff so when you fold it, it stays.“We’re talkin’ a slice that’s one-eighth of a behemoth 24-inch pizza, aka the Big Hank. Yeah, these slices ARE big; one makes a meal.
